parakeets are now home

April 29, 2007

Our two rescue parakeets, Sunny and Sally, were just adopted this morning. They were abandoned by their owner because they were too messy and didn't "tame" fast enough. Their owner already had them stuffed in a small box and was about to just drop them somewhere. Luckily a wonderful person was there to intercede and then found us to help find them a home. Their new Mom has other birds in the family, other parakeets and a senegal parrot. She fully understands that birds are quite messy and take time to become friends with you. I know they'll be well taken care of and have a permanent spot in their new home

losses

March 20, 2007

I am very sad and depressed to say that we lost Zachary the 8 week old rabbit. He went in on Friday to have exploratory surgery on the inflammation and wound around his neck ( that appeared to be something embedded around his neck) he stopped breathing within five minutes after being under anesthesia . The vet called me at work to let me know what happened and I was in tears. The surgery wasn't performed therefore nothing was ever found. But our vet did send out some samples of the inflamed tissue for pathology. I was devastated, along with many co workers who fell in love with Zachary's picture and my stories of him. We have Anthony and Envy his brother and sister they are doing great and will be spayed and neutered in 4 weeks, then adoptable when they have fully recovered. That was what I wanted for Zachary, he went too young. I hope he is now at peace and pain free.
On a much brighter note , Stachu was adopted. Stachu was a good sized , healthy guinea pig and as adorable as could be. His new Mom fell in love with him instantly and... [More]

after the vet

March 14, 2007

We are back from the vet, and I took in Chewy, Wilbur and Zachary the rabbit. Chewy is in pain, Dr.Fijas believes either from his bladder or back. He jumps, squirms and cries out when he touhes those areas. We went ahead and took an X-ray, he does not have bladder stones (whew) and he may have an area of his back that is "darkened" So his problem more than likely is his back, but he may have a urinary tract infection or bladder infection. He is on Baytril now, an antibiotic and metacam for inflammation and pain. We are hoping for an improvement, and an increase in activity and eating and drinking with less pain and discomfort. Dr.Fijas told me that guinea pigs are not good candidates for any type of back surgery, so he could be on pain management all his life. I am also to give him critical care each day for now to help with eating and weight loss. Wilbur has mange mites. That is the cause of all his itching and biting and all the fur loss and scabbing. He was given revolution and will get another dose in a month, that will clear up... [More]

Chewy

March 13, 2007

I will be going to the vet today with two guinea pigs. One is our own guinea pig, his name is Chewy and we have had him for about two years now. He has a slight neurological disorder. He has had a very round, hard, plump belly. Which to me seems great, but I have noticed that the rest of him ( his shoulder area, ribs, hip bones) seem to be getting thinner and bonier while his belly stays very plump. this is setting off alarms in me that something is very wrong with him. He also hasn't been as active in his cage these past couple of days, I am very concerned about him. Also going in is a guinea pig that was surrendered to us on Friday, his name is Wilbur. Wilbur has bald patches and scabbing. He is doing a lot of biting, chewing at himself and scratching. My suspicions is mites but I'll leave the diagnostics to Dr.Fijas. Of course Chewy will be in a seperate carrier from Wilbur and will not ome into contact with each other, so there won't be any contamination. I am hoping that both of them are treatable and will get... [More]

updating

February 23, 2007

wanted to post that Buttercup the deformed bunny ,and Butterscotch the elderly bunny are doing great.  Butterscotch has lost some needed weight, his extra baggage, and he is now effortlessy keeping his bum clean.  Buttercup has been drinking and eating normal, very well, and is still very fast on the carpeted floor, He can sure MOVE.

A female ferret was surrendered a couple weeks ago, her owner had to move away.  Her name is Bella and she is four years old.  She went to see the vet yesyerday for her health exam and rabies vaccine.  She is in tip top shape and did well with the vaccine.  She is unable to have her distemper vaccine until 2 weeks after the rabies one.  We do have Bella as adoptable on Petfinder now, we know she'll find a very good home, she is so sweet and adorable, she'll be a great companion and provide lots of love and be loved.

two parakeets

February 18, 2007

We have aquired two parakeets (Budgies) that will be adoptable after their vet health exam.  Their previous owner decided they were too messy and untrainable and was about to let them go outside if no one would take them.  Nevermind the fact that it is in the single digits outside and blustering lake effect snow, a tropical bird that hails from Australia would do just fine , right?  UGH, it sickens me how some people will let their pets go outside , to rid of them, without a regard to the fact that this means their death.  Sometimes I wonder if these people just don't care.  ...  Anyway, the parakeets are safe with us and will never be set free outside where they surely will never survive.  They appear to be two females, one is bright yellow and the other is a green.  Now for the hard part, what do I name them?  When I asked the former owner what their names are, she told me "they don't have names, we called them all sorts of things", uh huh..

hamster adoptions

February 10, 2007

today three hamsters were adopted and are now in their loving homes.  Patrick , a dwarf hamster that was surendered with a whole litter of his siblings, he had to be seperated because he was too much of a bully towards all the others.  He was always sweet with me and other people.  Today he was adopted and will have kids and people lavishing attention on him and he will live by himself, as he prefers.  Dexter the dwarf hamster was also adopted, Dexter was given up because his owner couldn't care for him anymore, he was older then and I had to socialize him for a while, he was afraid of hands.  In time he became clamer and and accepted me picking him up and touching him to it was time ot place him up fo adoption, a wonderful person has adopted him despite the fact that he is older.  And last but not least Chief the brown syrian hamster was adopted as well,  Chief was also part of an unwanted litter.  He is such a sweetheart and a gentle boy, he'll also love all the attention he will recieve.

Tomorrow someone is stopping by to meet and possibly adopt ,...

Buttercup is eating and drinking less

February 5, 2007

Buttercup is our disabled boy bunny that was surrendered a few weeks ago.  Today he isn't eating as well and hasn't drank much from his water bottle.  This is unusual for him, he's a great eater ( loves timothy hay) and normally polishes off a 16 oz bottle in 2 days.  I gave him a gut motility drug ( as prescribed by our vet) to hopefully kick start his GI tract in case he is in stasis.  I'll also give him some Sub Q fluids to prevent dehydration.  If he is not eating, pooping, drinking, like normal tomorrow, I'll call back the vet and make an appointment to get him in.

Sugar the rat is doing well, she hasn't worsened at all.  She still is loving her fleece blankets and good foods to eat and ear and head rubs.  We are enjoying our time together.
