This is Marcia Scott's story, she adopted Pearl the hamster back in 2006 -
We had a very grumpy hamster named Sqeekers. Sqeekers had the ideal name, as whenever we would try and change his bedding, he would sqeek, hiss and show his disgust with our existance. But, despite his personality, he was a member of our family and he was loved. Sqeekers was rescued from someone who no longer wanted a hamster and eventually passed over the bridge. The one family member who understood him was a cat by the name of Rosie. Rosie was a small exotic shorthair (also an exotic) who would spend the entire day watching Sqeekers and loving him. When Sqeekers passed away, Rosie felt bad. I decided to adopt another rescue and came across Life Long Tails under Petfinder. I saw a discription of a hammie by the name of Pearl. I fell in love with the little girl, even before meeting her. Shortly after reading the ad, we adopted Pearl and renamed her Goldie.
Goldie was an excellent name for this little one, as she was in reality a Golden Retriever trapped in a hamster body! She knew her name and would greet me each morning and say goodbye to me before I left for work. Again, Rosie took Goldie under her paw. The two girls were very close, even closer than Rosie and Sqeekers. Goldie loved her wheel and she especially loved her exercise ball. Each day, Goldie spent time in her ball, while Rosie would watch with loving and protective eyes.
Goldie had a sweet tooth, which was matched by none. Of course, we were careful how many treats she received, and her favorite were the yogurt drops. She loved her salads, fresh veggies from our garden. But, more than anything she loved her home. She knew she was loved and she loved everyone.
One evening, I noticed Goldie was moving a little slow in her ball, so I brought her upstairs to her little home and gave her a treat. I thought maybe she was tired. It was a Sunday and she typically got a little more attention on the weekend. Rosie perched up next to her and basically was with her for the entire night. The next morning, I said good morning to Rosie and went to greet Goldie and she had crossed the bridge... It was a very sad morning. I was filled with grief, but Rosie was even more filled with grief and very depressed.
Several nights later, my husband suprised me with a new hamster. We named her Felicity. Felicity is full of life and a real sweetie.
Unfortunately, Rosie passed away of kidney disease in January. I am sure that Goldie was there, greeting her best friend at the bridge. I can see Goldie enjoying her salad, her sweets, while her best friend looks on with loving eyes.
We can learn so much from our furry family members. A cat and a hamster are "natural" enemies and Rosie and Goldie were the very best of friends. We only had Goldie with us a few months. I wish we had her with us longer, but I feel honored that she choose to spend the rest of her short life with a family who loved her so very dearly.
