Adopt an Older Pet

These are the words of our adopted pet's new parents, they tell us all all about their new pet and how they are doing.

Pearl
This is Marcia Scott's story, she adopted Pearl the hamster back in 2006 -
We had a very grumpy hamster named Sqeekers. Sqeekers had the ideal name, as whenever we would try and change his bedding, he would sqeek, hiss and show his disgust with our existance. But, despite his personality, he was a member of our family and he was loved. Sqeekers was rescued from someone who no longer wanted a hamster and eventually passed over the bridge. The one family member who understood him was a cat by the name of Rosie. Rosie was a small exotic shorthair (also an exotic) who would spend the entire day watching Sqeekers and loving him. When Sqeekers passed away, Rosie felt bad. I decided to adopt another rescue and came across Life Long Tails under Petfinder. I saw a discription of a hammie by the name of Pearl. I fell in love with the little girl, even before meeting her. Shortly after reading the ad, we adopted Pearl and renamed her Goldie.
Goldie was an excellent name for this little one, as she was in reality a Golden Retriever trapped in a hamster body! She knew her name and would greet me each morning and say goodbye to me before I left for work. Again, Rosie took Goldie under her paw. The two girls were very close, even closer than Rosie and Sqeekers. Goldie loved her wheel and she especially loved her exercise ball. Each day, Goldie spent time in her ball, while Rosie would watch with loving and protective eyes.
Goldie had a sweet tooth, which was matched by none. Of course, we were careful how many treats she received, and her favorite were the yogurt drops. She loved her salads, fresh veggies from our garden. But, more than anything she loved her home. She knew she was loved and she loved everyone.
One evening, I noticed Goldie was moving a little slow in her ball, so I brought her upstairs to her little home and gave her a treat. I thought maybe she was tired. It was a Sunday and she typically got a little more attention on the weekend. Rosie perched up next to her and basically was with her for the entire night. The next morning, I said good morning to Rosie and went to greet Goldie and she had crossed the bridge... It was a very sad morning. I was filled with grief, but Rosie was even more filled with grief and very depressed.
Several nights later, my husband suprised me with a new hamster. We named her Felicity. Felicity is full of life and a real sweetie.
Unfortunately, Rosie passed away of kidney disease in January. I am sure that Goldie was there, greeting her best friend at the bridge. I can see Goldie enjoying her salad, her sweets, while her best friend looks on with loving eyes.
We can learn so much from our furry family members. A cat and a hamster are "natural" enemies and Rosie and Goldie were the very best of friends. We only had Goldie with us a few months. I wish we had her with us longer, but I feel honored that she choose to spend the rest of her short life with a family who loved her so very dearly.

Anthony

This story comes from Amanda who adopted Anthony the rabbit -

Hi Rachel, it's me Amanda Kobiolka, the one who adopted Anthony.  HE'S DOING GREAT!!!!  At first, our other bunny seemed upset that there was another rabbit in the room, but after five days, she gave in and seemed thrilled to have a friend.  They are getting along so well!! I recently moved them into the same cage so they could be together.  I often find them laying up against each other, and Layla seems to love to groom him!!!  When this happens, Anthony just lays down, closes his eyes, and relaxs!!!  He's very friendly, and his fur is soooo soft.  In the next few days, i hope to go out and buy a dog exercise pen for them to play in rather than the cage, although the cage is pretty big already.  Anyway, Anthony is being so good about his litter box, using it about 80% of the time.  Layla hasn't caught on quite yet.  Maybe Anthony can give her some pointers!  I would like to mail you some pictures if you would like, cause i took at least 50 of them already.  They are running around in their own private room upstairs as I type.  I love both of them sooooooo much!!!  I can't thank you enough!!! I would like to give you more updates if you wouldn't mind.

Snowball, Bubba and Doogie's family :)
These are pictures of the hammie and guinea pig we adopted from you on
November 13th of 2006. They are both doing very well.  Bubba is the
guinea pig. He is just the, cutest little pig. I am so glad I picked
him. He loves to be held. He cooperates nicely for bathes and nail
clippings. Every time I walk past his cage he wheeks at  me for
something either food or treat or attention. He gets lots of that here
from my 4 children. When we open the fridge or crinkle a bag he wheeks
right away. Let me tell ya he is one spoiled piggy. I love when I clean
his cage and put fresh bedding in he pops all over the cage. It is just
too cute. He definitely lets us know what he likes. We all get a kick
out of him.

The hammie Snowflake is also very loved. She likes when I give her
carrots and any type of treat. She takes it right from my fingers. She
can be nippy at times but maybe I am thinking I should wash my hands
cause I thinks she thinks our fingers are food. We give her a treat
everyday. So maybe she thinks our fingers are her treats. She is just so
cute, soft and fuzzy. She's even on her hind legs in the picture looking
for a treat. Too funny.
I admire you and all you do for the pets you adopt. You guys are
awesome!!!!

..

Below is a picture of Elso and Pugsley the bonded pair of bunnies, they are a spayed/neutered male and female pair.  They have a loving family now who have re-named them Simba and Nala.  Very fitting for Lionhead rabbits.  See how much they love each other and are happy in their new home?

Here is what Elso and Pugsley's Mom writes to us about their new family members
They seem to be enjoying their new home.  They have 3 dogs and a cat as their pets!

Nala and Simba sleep overnight in the cage that Santa brought.  In the morning, they are served some fresh fruit.  Fun to watch them position and steal from each other.  Apples are a favorite.

Before school, my daughter puts them in "hop-hop time" which is the puppy playpen on the other side of the office.  They have a house for hiding and we put in their food and water and whatever veggies they haven't finished.  They also have a hay ball, lots of soft things to sit on/rearrange, and some toys.  Their favorites are the slinkies and the corn meal can.  They spend the day playing and following the sunbeams.  Plus, I work in the office so we chat throughout the day.

Before bed, my daughter puts them back in the cage with fresh pellets, hay, water, and veggie balls.  As I type, they are clanging the veggie balls on the side of the cage trying to pull out the goods.  Their favorite veggies are dandelions and cilantro.

We are so enjoying the buns.  They are a hit with all of our friends, as well.  My girls and their friends take turns sitting in the playpen to talk to and play with the buns.  There have been several sleepovers in the bunny room as well!

Thank you so much for all that you do for these sweet, voiceless animals.  We tell everyone about your work in the hopes that they will adopt from you rather than a store.
